Knowledge Exchange

Five Elected Representatives and thirteen senior officers of Kolkata Municipal Corporation visited four Indian cities and interacted with key personnel on major climate-smart interventions of those respective cities. IPE Global facilitated the visits with support from British Deputy High Commission (BDHC), Kolkata.

This deliverable was planned in view of the fact that in certain Indian cities, city authorities and communities have demonstrated successful interventions for making the cities climate smart. These involved institutionalizing and implementing climate responsive and climate responsible actions, targeting both mitigation and adaptation.

The purpose of the exposure visits is to:

  • Enrich KMC’s institutional capacity to respond to the opportunities and impacts of climate change
  • Focus on providing information and knowledge on different aspects of environmental sustainability, including water management, waste management and energy security, in the context of climate change impacts in urban areas.
  • Showcase efforts undertaken by city governments to mitigate impacts of climate change and adapt to it for climate sustainability.

The Commissioner KMC, requested respective Commissioners along with a tentative itinerary. Each city corporation responded adequately. The Mayor, KMC selected the Elected Representatives and the Municipal Secretary nominated the officers.


November 02-04, 2015 – Bengaluru and Mysore:

One Elected Representative and four officers of KMC visited Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Mysore City Corporation (MCC). The Commissioner BBMP and Deputy Mayor MCC welcomed the participants. Both the corporations made informative presentations on various climate-smart interventions. The team also made field visits and interacted with key officials. The team particularly liked initiatives related to SWM processes and building bye-laws. The community initiatives by both the ULBs were commendable. The involvement of citizens and students around these issues were found to be very interesting.


November 23-25, 2015 – Coimbatore:

Two Elected Representatives and five officers of KMC visited Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMP). The Commissioner CCMP welcomed and briefed the participants about the city and various projects of the corporation. The team also made field visits and interacted with key officials. The team particularly liked initiatives related to SWM processes and solar energy projects. The corporation has effectively involved and engaged CSOs and Corporates in various climate smart and developmental interventions. The involvement of citizens and students around similar issues were found to be very interesting.


November 26-27, 2015 – Bhubaneswars:

Two Elected Representatives and four officers of KMC visited Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMP). The Mayor and the Deputy Mayor welcomed and briefed the participants about the city and various projects of the corporation. All corporators along with key departmental officers were present in the meeting. The Mayor himself took the team around the city. The team also made field visits and interacted with key officials. The team particularly liked the concept of Green Vending Zones, LED street lighting and Disaster preparedness initiatives. The corporation has effectively involved and engaged CSOs and Corporates in various climate smart and developmental interventions.
