History of Kolkata Nicco Park

The concept of this famous amusement park located in the heart of Kolkata started on the 300th anniversary of the establishment of Calcutta. Rajiv Kaul, the current chairman of the Nicco Group, went to Disneyland in the United States for a family vacation while the then ruling state government was planning the tricentenary celebrations.

The history of the creation of Nicco Park is quite interesting. According to various sources, when Rajeev Kaul returned from the United States of America, he faced various questions, because at that time he was very much needed for the necessary work of the country. When probed about it, Rajiv Kaul replied, “I went to America to see if I could build a Disneyland in Calcutta”. Although initially it was considered as a pretext, later the plan to build Nicco Park in joint venture with West Bengal government was implemented.

Construction of Nico Park

Back home, Rajiv Kaul decided to create a park in joint venture with the West Bengal government. The West Bengal government had also promised to build this park at that time. After this, Nicco Parks and Resorts Limited Company was formed to build the park. It was a joint sector company within National Insulated Cable Corporation Limited. Nicco Park received its certificate for construction and business on 31st March 1989. The main objective of the company was to build an amusement park in the heart of Kolkata, which would be owned and maintained by Nicco Parks and Resorts Limited Company.

At that time Rajiv Kaul sought financial help from Geoffrey Thompson, the then owner and managing director of Blackpool Park’s Pleasure Beach. He promised only to survey the land and advise on design and safety. Rajib got the idea for Nicco Park’s River Cave from Thomson’s Blackpool.

Nicco Park was opened to the public at a cost of around 8 crore rupees. This time the number of rides in Nicco Park was 13 in total. In this Nicco Park, the toy train was brought from the earlier Jhilmil Park and improved and rotated in the entire park.
