Prafulla Chandra Ghosh, the first Chief Minister of West Bengal, was born on 24 December 1891 in Dhaka city of undivided Bengal. His father’s name was Purna Chandra Ghosh and his mother’s name was Paranatri Devi. His father was a school teacher, so he was very good at studies from an early age.

Since his father was a teacher, he was a very bright student from the beginning, after passing school he studied chemistry at Jagannath College, Dhaka. Later he shifted to Calcutta and completed his graduation from Calcutta University.

Being highly educated, Prafulla Chandra Ghosh got a job in the then Bengal Mint. But he quit his job and joined the Indian independence movement in 1921 inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. As a result of this, he was imprisoned for almost 8 years, after coming out of jail, he again joined the Salt Satyagraha Movement with Gandhiji. By 1939, he was a member of the Congress Committee. Then when the British planned to leave India in 1947, Prafulla Chandra Ghosh’s name came up as the Chief Minister of West Bengal and he became the first Chief Minister of Bengal. Prafulla Chandra Ghosh was elected as the West Bengal First Chief Minister on 3 July 1947. During this time he was the Chief Minister for a total of 42 days, he was once again made the Chief Minister of West Bengal when the British left India on 15 August 1947. Prafulla Chandra Ghosh became the Chief Minister of West Bengal as a representative of the Indian National Congress. Although he did not rule West Bengal for long, he resigned as Chief Minister on 22 January 1948 and his rival Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was declared the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

Then President’s rule was imposed in West Bengal on 20 February 1968. Ajay Kumar Mukherjee became the Chief Minister of West Bengal on behalf of the Bengal Congress when President’s rule was abolished after one year and five days.
